- Ug Wug is rumored to live beneath the Reversing Falls in Saint John, New Brunswick. It’s described as a half-seal, half-salmon creature thirty meters long, with gigantic glowing red eyes.
A few sources claim the creature is an Inuit legend.
- In an essay circa 1950, David D. Archibald mentions a story of a lone diver that died of fright while exploring the falls. His hair turned white from what he’d seen, and never said what he saw before the end. This is the story I decided on telling in the image since it contains a nice ‘observer’ character to frame everything up.
- Design was heavily inspired by a photo from the 1950’s of a mural, by artist Isabelle MacArthur. Her design was wider, more seal elements with a thinner tail. I focused a lot more on claws, eye shape, taller dorsal fins and making the tail more whale-like and powerful, or the midway between a whale and a salmon.
- I approached the design with anatomy in mind, working from the skeleton up.
